Our grade one class began their project with the introduction of a variety of books on the topic of Halloween. The books were presented using many of the components of the Balanced Literacy framework: guided reading, read alouds, shared reading and independent reading. We discussed many of the features of these books and why they were considered to be scary or Halloween stories. We then brainstormed for Halloween words which were posted on chart paper in the classroom. The children were given the opportunity to discuss their ideas for a scary Halloween story in groups. Then the children recorded their stories in their journals. As students finished their stories we revised and edited their work during writing conferences. The children used the paint program to illustrate their work using the text tool to record their stories directly onto their pictures. Contributing classes voted on the scariest Halloween picture displayed on this website. These results are posted on graphs by grade.
